Joe Sakic out Six Weeks with Herniated Disc

Joe Sakic will be out for six weeks with a herniated disc and my first thought was: "At least now we know."

My second thought was: "Didn't that show up the first time?"

I'm obviously not a doctor but it seems to me that this should have been spotted when he got his initial MRI done.

It's unfortunate and likely extremely frustrating for Sakic as he is in the twilight of his career.

When he was on the ice this season, he was flying while he racked up 12 points in 15 games.

But his body might be starting to say "No mas"

After the injury last year and this injury part of me thinks he is going to hang up the skates after this year.

I really hope he has a few more left in him :(

Per the Post it seems like the herniated disc happened after the initial weight room injury. Apparently from trying to play before he had fully healed.

The medical and training staff deserves as much ire as we can muster.

jed, it certainly can't be helping his future retirement decision.

joe, I guess that explains why it was such a quick exit in that game.

No waiting around to see if it was tweaked, he knew something was wrong.

Herniated discs happen as do other injuries, but the way they happen with this crew just doesn't sit well.

I agree with the "at least we know" part. I said it in my latest show that this will be a chance for someone to step up knowing for sure that Joe will be out for an extended amount of time. Hope some of the guys that we should be able to count on take advantage of this soon, I know Lappy can't keep this pace up forever...or can he? Seems like forever since his 20 goal season, sure wouldn't mind seeing that again!

Yeah, Lappy has been gold lately. I just need him to roll out the fists once in a while so he can be one of my top fantasy players!

With the contract in the bag and Sakic out, it's time for Stastny to up his play. He - and the whole team - started it against Minnesota and hopefully it continues.

While he'll never be Forsberg-esque in putting a team on his back, he still has the capability to urge the team on by example.

Speaking of putting a team on Forsberg-esque, I watched Atlanta twice this week as they were on TSN Tuesday and Wednesday night.

I gained a whole new appreciation for Ilya Kovalchuk.

I still think he's a bit of an ill-tempered baby at times, but he was really flying out there and willing the Thrashers to keep playing even when down by 2, 3, 4 goals.

I typically considered him a goal scorer and yet his passing was amazing. He always wanted the puck on his stick but he wasn't selfish about it. When the time was right, he would dish it off, sometimes through 2 or 3 defenders, right to an open teammate.

I was pleasantly surprised. But I'm still pissed at him for scoring the OT winner against Canada in the Worlds this spring ;)
