The Ryan Smyth Rumors Keep on Coming

The Ryan Smyth trade rumors abound and as the trade deadline gets closer, the rumors get farther from reality.

Today it's Bruce "Malkin to the Kings" Garrioch who states in no uncertain terms that the Colorado Avalanche are shopping Smyth.

He starts off with this now-classic refrain:

The Avalanche, buried at the bottom of the Western Conference, want to shed salary.
For all the people that claim the Avs want to shed salary, nobody has explained why. While Kroenke's real estate holdings may have taken a hit, Wal-Mart is still raking in cash so I can't see that Kroenke is caring too much about the ol' pocket book. And given that the Avs still have a relative abundance of cap space - they're losing a bit of dead weight at the end of the season and have no high-profile RFA's or UFA's looking for big raises - I can't see the problem there either.

He follows that up with:
...attendance is plummeting in a market that used to routinely sell out.
And shedding salary and getting rid of your best players will fill the seats? Give me a break.

He then lets us know that even though Smyth has stated that he's happy in Colorado:
...in hindsight [he] probably should have stayed with the Oilers.
Because the Oilers have had nothing but success since Smyth left, right?

But all of the above seems brilliant compared to the gem he pops out of his ass here:
...the fans in Montreal would embrace his hard-charging style and the Avs won't want a lot in return.
The Avs won't want a lot in return? Do I even have to dignify that with a response? What in the blue hell would make Garrioch think that the Avs wouldn't want a lot in return for a player of Smyth's calibre?

It's complete and utter bullshit. The day I hear of Smyth going to the Habs for a 2nd-rounder is the day I head out to Ottawa and shine Garrioch's shoes.

The Avalanche will make some moves by the trade deadline, but Ryan Smyth will be staying in the Mile-High City.

Shane you forgot the #1 rule of All Canada-jingoistic based hockey rumor mongers... errr I mean writers: Good players should always play in Canada, because Jingoistic Canadians said so.

delta, I amused myself with the swears in the article followed by a "dressed down" version in the labels. Glad someone else noticed :)

jib, too true. It gets frustrating to have that representation out there for Canadian fans.

It bothers me because that's the real sentiment behind all these Ryan Smyth trade rumors: that an American team doesn't deserve him

Uh oh, Shane. Do I need to remind you who are GM is, shoe shine boy? ;) You would hope that Giguere wouldn't be *that* stupid.

jib, didn't you know? We should go back to the Original Six days when hockey was hockey! Wait...how many Canadian teams were part of the original six? 2/6? So about 33%? And now there's 6/30? So about 25%? Yep, things sure have drastically changed, haven't they?

People always look at cases like Nashville, Phoenix, etc and say "Why should they have a hockey team? It's not frozen tundra country!" and completely forget the logistics of population.

Sure, Winnipeg wants an NHL team. They never wanted to lose the Jets. But they couldn't support evem the terrible attendance the Coyotes get these days.

And I say all that without checking any numbers, only a knee-jerk reaction to most Canadians fans knee-jerk reactions ;)

Shane Giroux said...

bob, how I'll toss in a shoe shine for you too if it goes down like that ;)

Giguere may not be coming across like a genius these days, but he's smarter than that.

And I say all that with a nagging voice in the back of my head telling me "You better hope your trust is well placed...idiot" :P

i totally agree with your argument except for the way you talk up smyth. he is an underachieving expensive player. he is a good player. but you seem to make him out to be a great player.

he should get more than a 2nd rounder for him. but i wouldnt expect as much as oilers got for him when they traded him to the islanders.

You american fans are totally clueless...

Where does hockey get the most coverage ?

Canada

So which teams are the Canadian media going to cover ?

Canadian Teams

So why dont we hear more rumours about U.S. teams getting Ryan Smyth ?

Because major media outlets in the U.S. dont even cover hockey **cough** ESPN **cough**

The only coverage hockey gets in the U.S. is from d ouche bags like Eklund (www.hockeybuzz.com) and stupid useless hacks that write blogs for local newspapers.

anonymous, you realize I'm Canadian, eh?

I think it's lame to claim that simply because TSN is Canadian media, they will understandably only cover Canadian teams.

I can see them having a bias towards Canadian teams - and even that doesn't sit well with me - but every year it's the same thing:
Lecavalier to the Habs!
Smyth to the Habs!
Sundin to Vancouver!

Ok, they got one right.

previous anyonymous,

Smyth will definitely get more than a first-rounder. If he goes, I think people will be surprised at what he gets.

So far, it certainly looks like Edmonton was able to sell high to the Islanders but GMs won't be discounting experience come playoff time.

I meant definitely more than a second-rounder.
