Zetterberg Gets 12-year, $72M Extension

Unbelievable.

$6M/year for a player of Henrik Zetterberg's calibre is highway robbery on the part of the Wings.

They may yet get Marian Hossa and Johan Franzen in under the cap as well after this hometown discount.

It's front loaded, he'll average 7 MM the first 10 years and get 1 MM for the last 2 years. Brilliant move by Holland to keep him at the 6MM cap.

Holland again shows why he's the best GM in the league. The last 2 years for $1M/season is pretty brilliant.

And it shows the liberties you can take when you build a contender.

You can get guys like Hossa and Zetterberg signed on the cheap.

But they still have to live in Detroit :P

The Forechecker brought this to my attention via Mirtle's blog

The NHL could reject Z's contract

This would be quite humorous.

They made the numbers work by slipping in a 3.something million year in between the 7M and 1M years. Great move by Holland. One that our dunce of a GM probably couldn't even ponder.

Yep, well played.

And if Zetterberg retires before the contract runs its course - something I think Holland is expecting - the contract is off the books.

Very good contract and good for Zetterberg because he was underpaid on his last contract.
